[Lightly, fairly. He steps into the kitchen properly, so at least he's not haunting the entrance. It's so very... pink. But it's clean, and it has much more utility than before. The cartoonish little unicorns plastered on the wallpaper don't bother him.]

Isn't it a little late to be fussing in the kitchen?

[ Alec gives him a flat look. ]

Isn't it a little late to be going for a walk?

I can't sleep.

[But now that he's here, he's going to be nosy. Approaches to nigh peer around Alec, hands clasped behind his back.]

What are you cooking?

[striketwice]

Do you mind?

[ God damn. He already knew that his midnight forays into the kitchen wouldn't stay secret forever, sharing a dorm with nine other people, but he at least hoped for a little more privacy. And for it to be literally anyone other than Henry.

Anyway, laid out are a few eggs, some veggies and simple lunch meat in various stages of being diced up, a bowl and a skillet. Looks pretty omelete-y! Also of note, Alec has his sleeves rolled up, revealing a series of solid black bands tattooed into his arms, starting at his wrists and spaced out from there. ]

If you're gonna gawk at least do it like a normal person.

[Wow. Henry straightens but moves aside, so that he can “gawk” from beside Alec. He recognizes the ingredients, of course, and can assume that he’s probably going toss together an omelet of some nature — but that’s about the stretch of his cooking knowledge, unless he wants to dive a little deeper into his own head to unearth something fairly useless. So he doesn’t.

Instead:]

I’m just curious. I figured you’d be chopping away at something a lot less mundane if you were going to the trouble of hiding your meals away in the dead of night.

[His eyes do track to those dark, tattooed bands, though. Interesting.]

You're awfully quick to jump to the conclusion that I'm hiding. Maybe I just wanted a midnight snack.

That’s a lot of effort for a midnight snack.

[But he shrugs. Maybe it isn't? Except—]

Didn’t feel like cooking for your team when we were all awake, at least?

[ IS HENRY READING HIS MIND RIGHT NOW-- or maybe he's just reading him considering Alec has all the subtlety of a brick to the face right now. ]

Last I checked, it wasn't my job to keep you all fed.

[ Well, he's not denying it. ]

[He doesn’t even have to.]

No. But it would have been nice not to scramble around for dinner, for a change.

[Not all of us can cook! …Very well.]

[striketwice]

[ Casually, as he turns back to the cutting board to resume what he had been doing. ]

Show me where it says that's my problem.

[His lips quirk.]

You’re so uncaring, Alec. Your poor, poor starving teammates.

[There’s something detached about his tone. Like it’s hard to take offense when he didn’t expect much else, anyway.]

Will you at least let me watch until you’re done?

[ Even if it had been genuine, Alec wouldn't be bothered. As it is the tone prompts something like an amused snort out of him, the sound soft. ]

Sure, as long as you don't loom like some kind of fucking weirdo.

[Takes, like. A half of a step back.]

You won’t even notice I’m here.

[He says, and then immediately follows up with a question anyway.]

So is this how you’re going to eat your meals from now on? When the witching hour strikes?

[ Alec's eyes flick in Henry's direction. Yeah this is about how he expected this to go. ]

You're awful talkative for someone I'm not supposed to notice.

I meant that I wouldn’t physically get in your way. What, is small talk going to distract you from your eggs?

[striketwice]

This is a delicate operation, okay?

[ but FINE he'll answer your STUPID QUESTION. ]

No, I'm not gonna do all my cooking at 3 am.

I thought eggs were easy.

[Always has to have the last word, this one.]

In broad daylight, the others will expect to be fed, too.

Thank you, Captain Obvious. That doesn't mean I have to actually bend over and make everyone's breakfast on a whim.

Sure don't.

[ Chop chop chop chop. Alec is definitely using that knife with an efficiency that makes normal people fearful for their fingers. Veggies go in the bowl. ]

Besides, we're all adults here. Or adult enough. Everyone else can take care of themselves.

Don’t just assume some people have been given the chance to be as capable as you.

[Wry. Nods down at that frighteningly effective way of chopping veggies.]

I couldn’t dream of doing that, for example.

[ Whether intentional or not, that little remark seems to strike something, though the only evidence is a slight, slight pause in his chopping. Really, it's hard to tell just what it's a reaction to, if anything. ]

What, cutting up peppers?

[That slight pause is noted, because Henry misses very little when he’s paying proper attention—and what else is he going to pay attention to right now, anyhow?—and while curious, he can’t be sure what to attribute it to.]

That. Cracking eggs without getting shells in them. How high to heat the stove, and for how long. Any of it.

[Small things to some, unattainable to others.]

Those in-charge at the lab didn’t care about teaching anyone to cook. Priorities were elsewhere.

I bet they were.

[ Speaking of cracking eggs, he does that easily too. One-handed even. Not like he's trying to show off, it's almost automatic, the way he does it. ]

... I did a lot of the cooking growing up. Now I do it to unwind. I guess I have had a long time to practice.

[Cracking an egg with one hand? Not even spilling a little? That’s a true sign of someone who’s been cooking for a long time, surely.]

So it’s stress relief for you. Did you cook for your father a lot?
