alec brennan
The product of a one night stand, Alec is the son of Thomas Brennan, a former wizarding mercenary, and Sabrina Cordell, a human debutante. After a misguided attempt to blackmail Sabrina over the existence of Alec, Thomas wound up dead, and Alec would have very nearly followed suit if not for the fact that he was faster on the draw with his magic than his would-be assailant was with his gun.

Not long after that, Alec fell in with his dad’s old merc group, and they taught him the tools of the trade.

Alec now makes a living as a hacker and an information broker, acting as a sort of deeply embittered Robin Hood who steals secrets from the rich, ruining their lives and their reputation for the benefit of the poor. He's cocky, abrasive, and certainly not out to make friends. He's just here to do his job.

appearance
Alec strives to appear utterly, completely unremarkable. He’s just your average guy, with short hair, a bit of scruff, and a casual and probably boring sense of style. He tends to favor long sleeves in some fashion pretty much all of the time. His arms are covered in a series of solid black bands tattooed onto his skin. There are twelve in all in varying widths that start at his wrists and go up to his shoulders.

Otherwise, Alec has no shortage of scars from his life as a mercenary. Some are minor, others look more serious, like the wounds that left them were potentially deadly. They’re mostly peppered all over his torso.

abilities
magicThe wizards in Alec’s world cast spells using runic characters that are written into the air. Every wizard’s magic is a different color, though that doesn’t have any bearing on what kind of magic they can use or what kind of person they are. Alec’s magic is a grey-ish purple color, kind of dull and stormy and not very pretty.

Alec himself is highly skilled in the use of Elemental spells, being able to create and wield the elements of water, air, ice, fire, and lightning. Lightning is by far his specialty, which extends to him being able to manipulate and draw power from electricity as well.

The other schools of magic he borrows from are: Animation, the ability to manipulate inanimate objects, though his skills are limited to moving things in simple ways and picking locks. Destruction, which is exactly as it sounds, and Alec’s repertoire contains a few hard-hitting and fast concussive spells. Illusion, which allows Alec the ability to make himself or others nearly invisible (explained below), and to cast minor illusions to give things a different appearance.
spell tattoos When a wizard wants to skip the casting process, they can get spells tattooed right on their skin and magically hotwired to their brain, able to be activated with a mere thought. These spells are mostly defensive in nature, though any spell could reasonably be turned into a tattoo for easy use.

Being trained by mercenaries and being a meticulous planner means Alec has a lot of these. Alec’s tattoos are all solid black bands on his arms, as he had the spellwork covered in black ink so another wizard looking at him would not be able to tell what they do. He has twelve in all (six per arm), starting with one on each wrist, and spaced out from there all the way up to his shoulders. They are as follows:

Elementalism (5) - He has one tattoo for small, quick uses of each element: air, water, ice, fire, and lightning. These are very limited. For instance, he can create small fireballs or use enough lightning to act as a Taser. Anything more than that will have to be cast normally.

Animation (2) - The spells on his wrists are simple Animation spells designed to help him escape handcuffs.

Illusion (1) - Alec can instantly cast a camouflage on himself. Camouflage isn’t perfect invisibility, and his presence leaves a slight distortion in the air, like heat rising.

Enhancement (3) - These three spells enhance Alec’s strength, speed, and durability. He tends to use these only in small bursts because Enhancement magic pushes the body past its normal limit, and prolonged use can cause serious and often irreparable injury. He’s usually kind of sore after even using them a short time.

Defense (1) - With a thought, Alec can create an invisible shield around him and anyone near enough to him. This thing is meant to take a beating, and can guard against physical attacks as well as magical/energy based ones. There is a limit to its strength, though, and if it were to fail it would take several days at least before Alec could use it again. Things can pass out of the shield from the inside, leaving Alec free to use his own magic while it is active.
summon (reverie crau) Alec is in possession of a magical creature known as a Summon. While it sort of looks and functions as a familiar, Summons are much, much more than that. As rare as they are powerful, a Summon is raw magical power given sentience and form and tied to a wizard. The form of the Summon varies based on the needs of the summoner, and Alec’s takes the form of a crow he calls Tempest, or Temp for short.

Thanks to Tempest providing Alec with a direct line to the source of all magic, he is able to understand and learn new spells at an accelerated rate, and the magic he already knew is now much easier for him. He is also able to see through Tempest’s eyes, and piggyback on her incorporeal form (manifesting as dark storm clouds) as a sort of teleportation.

His bond with Tempest manifests in the form of a sketch-style wing tattoo on his chest, over his heart.
thievery/hacking Alec is better at worming his way into people’s private files or accounts and plucking up information than he is at picking pockets. Being a wizard with an extended lifespan means that he has grown up alongside technology as it moves forward and changes for a very long time, and can keep pace very well. He is an information broker first. If something physical needs to be taken, he usually has enough tricks up his sleeve to manage it well, but he feels much more comfortable doing his stealing from behind a monitor.
cooking It’s a private little hobby of his, and something he does to unwind or to clear his head after a troublesome job. He’s pretty damn good at it, if he does say so himself. He’s just very selfish about it and isn’t likely to do it in front of or for other people unless he really, really likes them, which is very unlikely.
full background
Alec's world is little different from our own, aside from the presence of magic and the supernatural. The magical community at large takes care to stay under the radar and out of the public eye. For the most part, everyone keeps to their own- wizards have their own, self-contained society; psychics, lycanthropes, etc, etc, have their own, self-contained society, and so on and so forth.

Wizards in this world make use of a special runic alphabet to cast spells. This alphabet is extremely extensive, and it is common practice for wizards to choose a Specialization, a set of runes that serve a specific function, and devote their skill and studies to that. As such, wizards are given classifications based on their area of study; Mender, Destroyer, Illusionist, Enhancer, Defender, etc, etc. Wizards who pick and choose from Specializations without focusing on a single one are called Jacks, as in "Jack of all trades, master of none". This is highly frowned upon, thanks in no small part to the massive class divide between older "upperclass" wizarding families who hold their legacy above all else, and... literally everyone else. Jacks are considered little more than thugs or muscle for hire. A wizard's power is also solely passed down through the males of the family, from father to son. Girls born to a wizarding father usually possess a singular magic Talent, and cannot use the runes to do magic, as far as anyone is aware.

The product of a one night stand, Alec is the son of Thomas Brennan, a former wizarding mercenary, and Sabrina Cordell, a regular human and the daughter of one of Chicago's many crime families, with heavy ties in the drug trade. After he was born, Alec’s mother vanished from his life, leaving him with his dad, who had done his best to straighten out his act in order to provide for his son. He left his mercenary group and studied in earnest to become a Mender, a wizard whose focus is repairing broken objects. They lived and worked in a tiny mechanic shop, scraping to get by, very much on the bottom of the food chain in every way. Alec was always resentful of his absentee mother, who had more than enough money to easily provide for them both, but instead chose to act as though they didn’t exist.

It was probably Alec’s bitterness an unhappiness that prompted Thomas to make a misguided attempt to blackmail Sabrina over the existence of Alec. Thomas wound up dead, and Alec would have very nearly followed suit if not for the fact that he was faster on the draw with his magic than his would-be assailant was with his gun.

Not long after that, Alec fell in with his dad’s old merc group, and they taught him the tools of the trade. Where before, Alec was an Elementialist, a wizard whose focus lies in wielding the elements, he learned enough to be classified as a Jack. While his strengths still very much lie in Elemental magic, he learned spells to pick locks and to make himself invisible and to enhance his natural strength and speed. As technology began to evolve, he shifted his studies there, leaving behind his mercenary roots in order to become a hacker, an information dealer, and a man very adept in the art of manipulation.

With his newfound skills as an information broker and saboteur, he tracked down his mother, and effectively ruined her life by exposing her and her family’s misdeeds, destroying her reputation and her marriage to a well-to-do businessman. But he didn’t stop there. Alec keeps mostly to the shadows, working as an embittered sort of Robin Hood, and making a name for himself by pulling power and influence out from underneath those who had it, for the benefit of those who did not. He has no preference for whether or not his clients or victims are human or wizard. A rich asshole is a rich asshole, and he loves taking them down a peg or two or seven. Now and again, he’ll join forces with his old merc team, or they with him, but Alec is much more comfortable behind a monitor than he is out in the field, slinging magic around.
